Michelle Alwardt is a dedicated budget and operations professional with special expertise in non-profit operations and political compliance. She has a deep passion for operations - particularly for taking big ideas and making them actionable, building and perfecting processes, and ensuring teams have the tools they need to be successful. As a queer woman with a background in organizing, she deeply understands how education and advocacy drive the policy changes that impact people’s lives.
Before joining Scale For Change, Michelle worked at Planned Parenthood Action Fund serving as Associate Director of Organizing Operations, where she led divisional leadership through the organizational budget process, managed the allocation of the budget between programs and across multiple grant funding streams. She was with the organization for 4 years, also serving in roles including Campaigns Project Manager for Planned Parenthood Votes $20m independent expenditure program. She led project management, budget management, and contract administration, and directed the Federal Election Commission regulatory reporting program for all electoral tactics, for both federal and state regulatory authorities, to minimize risk and ensure compliance.
Michelle has also served in the Obama Administration as Special Assistant to the White House Liaison in the Department of Health and Human Services, and worked at the LGBTQ Victory Fund on fundraising events and supporting leadership development programs for queer and trans elected officials & aspiring leaders.
Michelle is originally from southeast Michigan and earned her Bachelors in Communication from Oakland University. She lives in Arlington, Virginia with her partner, cat, & rabbit.
